"United we defeat malaria in Asia and the Pacific."

The APLMA is a leading initiative of Heads of Government in the Asia Pacific region, a Regional combined approach to fight against malaria. The APLMA was established in response to the call by Leaders at the 7th East Asia Summit in 2012 for a coordinated action to fight malaria, in particular, to address artemisinin resistant malaria.

The alliance is co-chaired by Australia and Viet Nam. The Asian Development Bank hosts the APLMA secretariat.

The role of the APLMA Secretariat is to support malaria leadership across the region. Particular emphasis will be provided in the endemic countries where artemisinin resistance has emerged and countries which have high burden of malaria.

The Importance of the Alliance

Malaria remains a major cause of illness and death in the region, with an estimated 36 million reported cases and around 49,000 deaths annually. This high rate of illness and loss of human lives affect the economic development of the region. This preventable illness is unacceptable, immediate and accelerated measures are necessary.

The political leaderships have acknowledged the urgency to speed up progress toward the 2015 World Health Assembly target of 75% reduction in malaria cases and deaths. And, the need to address the issue of artemisinin resistant malaria has been recognized as critical.

APLMA is the first high-level regional alliance to tackle public health threats. Malaria and artemisinin resistant malaria are regional concerns that do not recognize national borders. Cooperation across countries and sectors to prevent the loss of thousands of lives and billions of dollars is vital.

Mission and Vision

APLMA is a high level political advocacy platform established to accelerate political commitment, mobilize country and regional action, and track progress to reduce malaria in line with global targets. APLMA also aims to support efforts to eliminate resistance to the front line malaria drug, artemisinin.

The Mission of the secretariat is to translate this strong political commitment into action. The APLMA envisions The Asia Pacific Region free of Malaria and reduced risk from other communicable diseases.

The APLMA requests leaders from the Asia Pacific region to join the Alliance.
Political Solidarity is necessary.

Role of APLMA

APLMA will promote partnership and mutual accountability across countries in the region for ensuring evidence-based, effective action on malaria and artemisinin resistance.
The APLMA will promote regional political leadership and collaboration to:

  • Accelerate progress toward the target of 75 % sustained reduction in malaria cases and deaths, and
  • Catalyze action to reduce and control the spread of artemisinin resistant malaria in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

The APLMA focus will be on:

    1. Improving access to quality anti- malaria medicines and technologies, and
    2. Reviewing options and recommendations for closing the financing gaps for malaria control and elimination.
